Awali Golf Club: Bahrain’s Historic Sand Course Since 1937
Awali Golf Club is one of Bahrain’s historic golf venues, set within the former oil-town community of Awali. The club’s roots reach back to the 1930s, when golf became part of the social and sporting life of the British and local communities around the oil industry. Its traditional sand-course format is part of the Gulf’s golfing heritage and offers a very different playing experience from the country’s modern grass championship course at Riffa.

Course design and playing character
The course has 18 holes and is listed at par 70 for men, with a length of 6,734 yards from the blue tees. Rather than fully grassed fairways and greens, Awali retains the traditional sand-and-browns format. The playing surface includes sandy fairways and compacted sand greens, with artificial tee mats and a system of prepared surfaces that rewards touch, accurate positioning and a strong short game. The layout includes water features on selected holes, adding a different challenge to the otherwise arid setting.

The club is a member-focused community venue with a clubhouse and practice facilities. Its history is carefully documented by the club’s own historian, including the distinction between the earlier Bahrain Golf Club that existed in Manama in the 1920s and the later Awali course.
