Sedge Valley opened in 2024 and added a very different architectural voice to Sand Valley. Tom Doak drew on the heathland courses of Britain and the classic sub-6,000-yard tradition: a compact par-68 layout where the quality of the green sites and the decisions from the tee matter more than raw length. Small, distinctive greens and more formal bunkering set it apart from the resort’s larger, sand-dune courses.

COURSE INSIGHT

A different kind of Sand Valley

01 / COURSE

Sedge Valley is not simply a shorter version of Mammoth Dunes. Its design uses a more intimate piece of the property, with native groundcover, sandy soil and a routing that feels closer to a British heathland course. The green complexes are a central part of the challenge, and the bunkers frame angles rather than merely punishing a miss.

The par-68 card may suggest a gentle round, but the course asks for commitment. Shorter par 4s are not automatically easy, and the player must judge when to attack a green and when to leave a full approach from a preferred distance.

COURSE INSIGHT

Small greens make positioning essential

02 / COURSE

Doak’s routing places a premium on the relationship between the tee shot and the next angle. A drive that finds the fairway but leaves the wrong side can create a difficult approach to a compact target. The course rewards players who think one shot ahead and are comfortable using the ground to feed the ball toward the green.

Because the course is shorter than many modern championship layouts, the temptation is to reach for driver on every hole. Resist that reflex. The right club may be the one that leaves the simplest full shot, not the one that produces the longest drive.

COURSE INSIGHT

A shorter round with a serious design identity

03 / COURSE

Sedge Valley broadens the appeal of a multi-day Sand Valley stay. It offers contrast after Mammoth Dunes or the original Sand Valley course, and its scale can make it an enjoyable change of pace without diluting the strategic test. Golfers interested in architecture will find the course especially rewarding because each green asks a specific question.

Sand Valley handles reservations and visitor information for its courses through the resort. Check the current tee-time calendar, seasonal rates and any lodging or day-guest conditions before travelling.

THE TAKEAWAY

Par 68 does not mean low pressure.

Sedge Valley proves that a course does not need championship length to demand a complete game. Small greens and the right side of the fairway make every decision count.

PLAYING NOTE: Read the ground and the wind before choosing the club and line.
