Monte Rei North Course: Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf in the Eastern Algarve
Between the Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic, Monte Rei’s North Course uses broad valleys, mature trees and water to create one of Portugal’s most distinctive championship tests. A 2026 renewal has refreshed the course while preserving Jack Nicklaus’s original design.
Monte Rei North is set in the eastern Algarve, within a large estate between the Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is quieter and more inland than the region’s best-known coastal resorts: broad valleys, mature trees, native vegetation and water features shape the course. Jack Nicklaus’s Signature design uses that natural setting to create a championship round with multiple strategic choices rather than a single repeated challenge.
A mountain-and-ocean setting with water woven into the route
The North Course opened in June 2007 as the first of Monte Rei’s Jack Nicklaus Signature layouts. It is a par-72 championship course measuring 6,567 metres from the tournament tees. Water comes into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, while the routing combines eight par fours, five par threes and five par fives. The course sits in a natural valley landscape, with the foothills to the north and the Atlantic to the south.
The architecture balances wide fairways with shaped bunkers, streams, lakes and changes in elevation. The generous playing corridors do not remove the need for accuracy; instead they create options. A player can choose a conservative line to preserve position or take a more aggressive route where the reward is clear.
Water, elevation and the value of choosing the right line
The second hole illustrates the course’s risk-and-reward character. It is a par five with a lake influencing the tee shot and a series of cross bunkers shaping the second. The longer player may consider attacking the green in two, but the carry over water can play longer than it appears. A controlled line to the left side can provide a more reliable route into the hole.
The third drops sharply from tee to fairway, where bunkers frame the landing area and the contours can return a well-placed shot towards the centre. Later, the eleventh and fourteenth bring water close to par-three greens, while the fifteenth introduces a stream and gusting wind between the foothills. The course asks the player to judge not only distance but the angle and height of each shot.
A careful enhancement that keeps the Nicklaus design intact
Monte Rei carried out an extensive six-month enhancement programme in collaboration with Nicklaus Design in 2026. The work restored greens and bunkers, expanded teeing areas, upgraded practice facilities and improved infrastructure and landscape management. The aim was to strengthen long-term playing quality and sustainability without changing the essential character of the original design.
The North Course was temporarily closed from 13 April to 14 September 2026 while the works were carried out. The official course information now describes the renewal as completed. Visitors should still check the live tee-time calendar and current course status before travelling, particularly if planning around maintenance or seasonal conditions.
