Dukhan Golf Club: Qatar’s Historic Eighteen-Hole Sand Course
Dukhan Golf Club is one of Qatar’s oldest golf venues, set inside the Dukhan community on the country’s western coast. The club grew alongside the town’s energy-industry community and has long served as both a sports facility and a social meeting place. Its traditional sand-course character preserves a form of golf that predates the fully grassed championship resorts now found elsewhere in the Gulf.
Course at a glance
The traditional sand-course experience
The course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout. It began as a nine-hole course and was expanded to 18 holes in 1997. Rather than conventional grass fairways and greens, the playing surface uses a mixture of sand and oil, a traditional Gulf format in which compacted sand greens are often called ‘browns’. Players use a small piece of astroturf to support the ball when playing from marked sandy fairway areas. This style places a premium on touch, low-running shots and an effective short game.
Club facilities and heritage
The club provides a practice range, putting area and professional coaching for beginners and young players. Its clubhouse includes a lounge, changing rooms and kitchen, with barbecue facilities and a children’s playground. Weekly competitions take place during the cooler golfing season, which generally runs from September to mid-May, and the driving range is floodlit for evening practice.
