Rory McIlroy
Power, persistence and a place among golf’s greats.
Rory McIlroy’s career combines six major championships, three FedExCup titles and a defining achievement: completing the career Grand Slam at the 2025 Masters before successfully defending the title in 2026.

From Holywood to golf’s rarest club
A career defined by explosive power, major championships and a landmark place in golf history.
Rory McIlroy was born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. Encouraged by his father, Gerry, and coached from childhood by Michael Bannon, he emerged as one of Europe’s most promising amateurs. He reached the top of the World Amateur Golf Ranking in 2007, then turned professional that year at just 18.
His first professional victory on the European Tour came at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009, followed by his first PGA TOUR title at the 2010 Quail Hollow Championship. McIlroy’s first major arrived in emphatic fashion: an eight-shot win at the 2011 U.S. Open. He followed it with the 2012 PGA Championship, then won both The Open Championship and PGA Championship in 2014.
For more than a decade, the missing Masters title remained the final step toward the career Grand Slam. On April 13, 2025, McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a playoff at Augusta National to win his fifth major and become only the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam. In 2026 he returned to defend his Masters title, becoming just the fourth golfer to win back-to-back green jackets and bringing his major tally to six.

McIlroy’s 2025 Masters victory completed his career Grand Slam across the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, The Open and Masters. One year later, he successfully defended the title at Augusta National. The 2026 win was his 30th PGA TOUR victory and his 21st DP World Tour title.

Playing style and legacy
Power, fluid movement and a lasting ability to rise to defining moments.
McIlroy’s game is built around exceptional speed and distance off the tee, balanced by a fluid swing and high-quality iron play. His length can change the shape of a golf course, allowing him to attack holes that many players must approach more cautiously. At his best, he couples that advantage with aggressive but controlled course management and precise scoring shots.
His career has also been shaped by resilience. After major victories early in his twenties, he faced a long wait for a fifth major and the completion of the career Grand Slam. The 2025 Masters ended that wait; defending the title in 2026 made the achievement even more remarkable. With six major championships, multiple FedExCup titles and a long Ryder Cup record, McIlroy has become one of the defining European golfers of his generation.
