The original course and the dream of public golf
01 / COURSE
Sand Valley was founded on the idea of bringing high-quality public golf to the prehistoric sand dunes of central Wisconsin. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw began designing the routing in 2014, and the original course opened in 2017 as the resort’s first 18-hole layout.
The designers’ minimalist approach makes the land the main character. Large exposed dunes, native vegetation and firm, fast fairways create a landscape that can feel expansive and natural, while the hole designs offer multiple strategic routes. A player can choose a safer line or take on a more ambitious angle, depending on skill and confidence.
Multiple routes make the course a strategic puzzle
02 / COURSE
Sand Valley’s architecture is not based on forcing every player towards one ideal line. Alternative fairways, central bunkers and broad landing areas create choices about how much risk to accept. The correct decision can change according to the day’s wind, the tee selected and the player’s preferred approach distance.
Firm and fast surfaces mean the ground game matters. A ball can release farther than expected, while a well-chosen landing area can leave a simple running approach. Players who understand the contours and avoid chasing maximum distance on every hole will find the course both playable and deeply strategic.
The original Sand Valley is not the same as Mammoth Dunes
Sand Valley is the resort’s first course, designed by Coore and Crenshaw and opened in 2017. Mammoth Dunes and Sedge Valley are separate courses with their own designers and playing identities.
A resort destination with a wider golf collection
03 / COURSE
The original Sand Valley course is only one part of a destination that has grown to include other distinctive layouts, including Mammoth Dunes and Sedge Valley. Each course brings a different design voice to the same sand-country setting, making a multi-day visit attractive for golfers who want variety rather than repeating one style.
The resort provides official trip-planning and tee-time information. Visitors should check current lodging packages, seasonal availability, caddie arrangements and transport between facilities before booking. Sand Valley is a remote destination, so a little planning can make the difference between a rushed round and a proper golf stay.
Plan a stay around the resort’s course collection
Sand Valley publishes online tee times and trip-planning information for its golf courses. Confirm the current reservation window, lodging options, seasonal conditions and any access requirements for day guests before booking.
